Voters' Education

Are we Ready to Vote?

On May 14, 2007, we will be facing a difficult yet very significant task. On that day we get to choose our leaders. Leaders, who will either lift our nation from all its destitutions, or bring it to its downfall.

As the election time approaches, have we really thought about the importance of our votes? How well do we know the candidates? Or better yet, what is the electoral system or how it works? Have we really asked ourselves, “are we ready to vote?”

To answer those questions, projects aimed at voter’s education have been given much more attention. The partylists Kabataan and Akbayan and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) have made various actions to help step-up voter’s education.

One of the major projects of Comelec this year was the launching of their website www.bagong botante.com which offers information and assistance to voters especially to those newly registered. The Kabataan and Akbayan Partylist also have a similar project to Comelec. Their only difference is they also campaign for their candidates through their site.

Although the internet seems like the best way to connect with the youth today, not all have access to it. Other groups like the Visayas Human Development Agency (VIHDA), Youth Volunteers for Orderly and Transparent Elections (YouthVOTE) and the Cebu Citizens Involvement and Maturation in People’s empowerment and Liberation (C-CIMPEL), have engaged in various activities in the community to help voters answer their questions and realize the value of their vote. But unlike Comelec and the partylists, they do not have online projects.

Among the three, only C-CIMPEL, a church-based political education NGO in between elections, works on voter’s education all year round. According to Ms. Dottie Maglasang, C-Cimpel works in “helping the people to choose” the right candidates. By organizing seminars, workshops and assistance, they are not only helping out the public in participating in the political decision-making, but also in the broader areas of governance during in-between elections.
They chose not to have an online version of their organization because they focus more on an interactive way of helping the public. They encourage the people to choose to move from patronage politics to a more participative politics, and to be more “aware of the importance of the elections vis-à-vis good governance”.

Although the internet is very widespread now, not everybody has complete access to it and sometimes it is not enough to simply read what you want to know. In this coming elections, let us all remember that who we will vote is very important since our future lies in their hands. Through the help of organizations like C-Cimpel, people will learn how valuable and powerful even a single vote is. To ensure the success of the 2007 elections, we must be equipped with the right knowledge to decide who we want to choose as our new leaders.

Online Journalism

When we checked out our subjects for this sem, i was a bit shocked to see another journalism subject. all i could think of was, "hey! i can only handle one journ subject at a time!" i was really worried. I mean what if i fail? What if i won't be able to cope with the two subjects? the what ifs were really piling up and i was beginning to get smothered by them. 0_o

When classes started, i was a bit relieved to hear that publishing would be in the form of our blogs and throught the net. I'm really not a big fan of blogs but somehow, i felt better owning one. We are the bosses of our blogs right? So we can write basically what we want! What could be easier than writing for yourself?..... hohoho.. poor me, knowing so little about something so .. whats the right word...."brilliant"? I never thought that i could learn so many things about something i once considered silly. (writing in virtual "diaries" that anyone could read")

We talked about a lot of things in class but what really amazed me was the power that one can hold even with just a simple blog or post. In our times, the internet has become a tool. A tool that can be used for entertainment, connecting with family and friends, and believe it or not, freedom! The article about the chinese people andtheir blogs really amazed me. like what i worte on my reaction paper " i never thought that the blog played such an important role".

It was also because of this class that i learned how to interact with fellow netizens. I have chatted with a few bloggers and even asked advice from them. I have been a "net addict" for quite sometime now, but there were some things that i only learned in this class. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.. hehehe...

I admit i am really not that faithful in updating my blog. When i read the blog of "Captain K" from the Times Citizen of the year, i was really ashamed. Here was a soldier, fighting in a war for his life and country who was still able to update his blog and share to everyone his experiences. Not only was he able to do that, he was even recognized because of it. It made me ashamed coz here i am, wasting my blog when someone out there could really use it for more "significant" things. .. that's why now, if i have enought time, i'll update my blog more often.

Well, seems like i'm going on and on here. My post is getting a bit lengthy and since i don't want to bore you guys with my chitchat and nonsense, I have to end here. my final words?

Journ 121 has been a VERY challenging subject for me like all my journalism subjects. This is not because of the deadlines that i have to meet and the 7:30 am classes but, because i get to explore different sides of the internet that i have'nt seen yet. It was hard, but i really learned a lot from it. :)

Rush

Rush. and i don't mean the drink that we can buy at the store.....

Last wednesday, my friends told me that they needed help with the video of our play. I agreed to help coz i knew they had lots of other things to do. I did too, but let's just say their's were more.. how should i put this...uhh rushed?..hehehe they were just informed that our play was to be shown at Ayala for the International womens day. All we had to do was upload the video then burn it to a CD. After a while they were again informed that we only had 20 minutes. Our play was 40 minutes so we had to do something.... Ara asked me to do a trailer for it.. i agreed again coz i thought it was gonna be fun!

After talking, we attended a talk about Bigfoot an international film academy or sumthing... As some of you might know.. i really am interested in film.. The only part that i hate bout it is the acting.. (good thing we weren't made to act!) After the talk, i was more than happy to have something to work on.

Finally the video finished loading.. BUT! when we viewd it.. THERE. WAS. SOMETHING. WRONG. WITH. THE. AUDIO!!!! huhuhu.. When i got home i discovered i didn't have enough pictures. I started working at around 7:30, my computer kept getting restarted so i had to save, redo, save, redo ahhh!! Then i had to edit the music then add some things while thinking of something creative...I slept at 5 AM then woke up at 6:30.

When i showed it to my friends, they said t'was great.. i really wouldn't know coz i find it hard to look at my work as a different person. For me it still needed something.

After class ara came home with me to work again. it took me a while to finish it coz of the errors and power surges that kept happening..... aaahhhh!!!

When we got to ayala... I was starting to get really nervuos...I was afraid of what they would think about our work... when it was shown It was real bad.... There was something funny w/ the audio and the video was almost transparent because it was too bright at the stage. Most of the people didn't understand it, cept for us of course.

When it was finally done i wasn't really happy bout it. I felt really bad but, somehow i felt fine coz my friends said it was great (i did it for them anyways! hehe so it doesn't really matter what those people thought)...Although it would have been great if i was able to give justice to my friends' performances! hehehehe

(I only had 1 nd 1/2 hours of sleep.,.,so right now my body is screaming for sleep!! is it okay if we go oh)----> This sentence doesn't make any sense right?.. i wrote that last night. When i read it a while ago i knew i just had to edit my post!.. hahaha it's funny coz you can tell that i was drowsing off while writing it nyahaha...

When i upload our trailer i'll post it soon hehehe...

hahaha!!

My brother read my poem just now.. Boy! was he surprised when he read the title....HAHAHAHA!!!.. GOTCHA!!.. Well anyways.. i added some more lines hope it'll tickle your silly bones hehehe....

What Turns a Man On

What turns a man on?
I’d say,

A woman's scent
A woman's physique
And to some extent,
A woman's technique

Man indeed has different interests
What they are, is quite hard to detect.
When a man and woman walk abreast
To predict what they're thinking should challenge your intellect!

Now let me go back to this funny little lore
About what makes a man take a second glance
Hope I’m not becoming too much of a bore
Do read on and give me just one more chance!

So, what turns a man on?

The slender curves that their eyes can trace
That sweet smell that catches their attention
The graceful, kind actions and that beautiful face!
Of one of God’s most, magnificent creations!

Hope you enjoyed it as much as i enjoyed laughing while making it!!

What turns a man on?

HAHAHAHA!! I'm sure you guys are saying..

...."WHAT?! emem's writing about that?!"....

hehehe.. your dang right i am!... but... in a different way hihihi.. I actually thought of this when i was on my way to school this morning.

As i was walking, minding my own business, a nursing student (a girl) passed by. When she did i caught a whiff of the perfume/cologne she was wearing. It smelled really nice (but was too much for my poor nose) that i took a second glance at her. When i did, i saw a guy take a second look at her too.. hahaha that was funny.. well for me anyway... It was then that i thought hmmm...What turns a man on? What catches their attention?... hehehe combined with scenes from memoirs of a geisha, i came up with this....

What Turns a Man On?

What turns a man on?

A woman's scent.

A woman's physique.

and to some extent,

A woman's technique

hehehe... i know it's short but hey!... at least you could say my mind was working ! hahaha

My bro and i had some "quality" time together hehehe....I was able to delete the virus that infected our comp (with his help---he kept acting like the supervisor) and cleaned our bestfriend (our computer). Now i have a new name for it. "DUST COLLECTOR" hehehe... man, dust was everywhere!...we had to use pullers, scissors (there were hair tangled on the fans!) and our handy dandy.. rag!! hahaha... I was itchy all over and my bro couldn't stop sneezing.. hahaha....
Talk about weird "bonding" time hahaha . We just decided it was time to clean our comp. no matter what the risk...problems often arise after we touch the wires..

ooof!.. bye!!

I got to go.. my bro has to use the comp.. and I.... need to do my assignments!.. nyahahaha
